Strengthen District-Level RMNCAH Mentorship Capacity in Rwanda

30 newly selected district-based mentors and champions equipped to support healthcare providers in Nyarugenge and Muhima.

From 26–30 October 2026, We For Health (W4H), in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), conducted a five-day orientation for 30 newly selected district-based Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) mentors and champions at Nyarugenge District Hospital.

The initiative aims to strengthen local ownership and ensure the long-term sustainability of the RMNCAH mentorship programme by transitioning mentorship responsibilities to district-based mentors. These mentors will directly support healthcare providers in health centres served by Nyarugenge and Muhima District Hospitals.

Equipping mentors with practical skills and knowledge

The orientation focused on equipping participants with the knowledge, skills and practical tools required to effectively mentor healthcare providers and contribute to improved RMNCAH service quality.

Over the five days, participants explored several key areas, including the application of national mentorship guidelines, mentorship tools and logbooks, adult learning principles, coaching techniques and competency-based training.

The programme also covered data use for decision-making, identification of performance gaps, root cause analysis and Quality Improvement (QI) methodologies, including the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle.

Additional sessions focused on communication and interpersonal skills, active listening, constructive feedback, leadership, team building and conflict management.

A key component of the orientation was the Helping Babies Breathe module, which combined theoretical learning with practical simulations and skills demonstrations to reinforce essential neonatal resuscitation competencies.

Learning through practice and collaboration

The training adopted an interactive and practical approach, combining presentations with clinical simulations, demonstrations, role plays, case studies and group exercises.

Participants also worked on developing draft mentorship plans, Quality Improvement project frameworks, competency assessment tools and feedback templates that can be applied during future mentorship visits.

These practical exercises are intended to help mentors identify healthcare providers’ competency gaps, provide structured support and monitor progress using data and established assessment approaches.

Strengthening sustainable healthcare support

By strengthening district-level mentorship capacity, this initiative seeks to support a more sustainable mentorship cycle for health centres under Nyarugenge and Muhima District Hospitals.

The expected results include stronger mentor–mentee relationships, improved quality of mentorship, enhanced healthcare provider competencies and more systematic, data-driven evaluation of progress.

Following the orientation, W4H and the RBC Mentorship Desk will coordinate follow-up reviews to assess the application of skills during mentorship visits within four weeks of training completion.

Through its collaboration with RBC and district health partners, We For Health continues to contribute to stronger healthcare systems and improved quality of RMNCAH services in Rwanda.
